The Lenovo Idea Pad Y480 is the replacement of very popular Lenovo Y470 with some difference in features. The Lenovo Y series is mainly popular in students because of its size and light weight and why not? When it comes to performance, business friendly features and comfortable keyboard, Lenovo is the king.
The Idea Pad Y480 comes with a brand new GPU made by NVIDIA with a quad core processor which is a Intel Ivy Bridge type processor. Now we will see its features one by one.
Features Of Lenovo IdeaPad Y480
Design And Build
The Y480 is a 14 inch notebook with 5.1 pound weight and 13.6 X 9.4 X 1.3 inch body. It gives you two different design options to choose. Either you can go for patterned lid, black color case or you can opt for grey brush metal finish.
Keyboard And Touch Pad
As solid keyboard and Lenovo are almost synonymous, so as per expectations the Y480 also provides a goodkeyboard to give ultimate typing experience. The Y480 keyboard is almost similar to Y470 but the main difference is that the Y480 keyboard comes with backlit which helps us to find any key is presence of low light or in dark.
The Y480 keyboard is great in terms of usability. If you look from the top the keys look like islands floating on the sea. The keys are well spaced from each other for better typing experience.
This type of key board is known as Chiclet type keyboard. Lenovo calls the design as Accutype Chiclet design. The only disadvantage of the key board is that the Home, End, PageUP, PageDn keys are placed at the extreme right side of the keyboard because of which normal users may fell some difficulties at the beginning.
In Y480 Lenovo also removed some touch sensitive buttons (media buttons) as in Y470. The Y480 only has touch sensitive color adjustment and mute button. Media buttons are physical button in Y480.
The synaptic touch pad of Y480 which is commonly known as click pad has an update in it. The left and right buttons are integrated with one giant touch pad. The small vertical line which lies at the bottom is the border between right and left mouse button.
The surface of the touch pad is smooth but offers too much resistance. The touchpad supports multi touch mode like two finger scroll and pinch zoom which is quite impressive. Practically the touchpad works fine and if you want to register left click, just push down any where on the pad.
Display And Sound
It is very much sad that Lenovo has gone for 1366 X 786 pixel resolution for its 14.0 inch glossy finished display in Y480. 1600 x 900 pixels would have been better for this laptop.
Although glossy finish helps in popping up colors of the screen but the main problem with glossy finish is, in presence of strong light source it creates unwanted and un pleasant reflections on the screen. The display is nicely manufactured by AUO.
Lenovo comes with One Key Theater Button located top right side on the keyboard. This button allows us to optimize the screen view between Movie mode, Normal mode and Intelligent mode as per our requirement.
The Y480 comes with Intel Wireless Display to view laptops screen on a monitor or an HDTV.
For video chatting purpose there is a 720 pixel web camera located on the top-center of the screen. The Idea Pad Y480 comes with JBL speakers which provide crisp, clear and loud audio which is enough to fill a mid-sized room.
There is no disturbing noise from the speakers like many other laptops. For Surround sound effect Y480 is loaded with Dolby Home Theatre V4. The speakers are located at top left and top right side above the keyboard.
Hardware Specifications
The Lenovo Idea Pad Y480 comes with 2.3GHz Intel core i7-3610QM Ivory Bridge processor with brand new NVIDIA GeForce GT640M-Le graphics which have 1GB dedicated memory, 8Gb of DDR3 !600MHz RAM and 750GB, 5400 RPM hard drive.

Coming to the port configuration if you look at the left side you will find 2 x USB3.0 ports, HDMI output, RJ-45 LAN port, VGA monitor output port along with exhaust vent and a lock slot. On the right hand side you will find 2 x USB2.0 port, microphone jack and a head phone jack.
The 8X super multi DVD drive is placed in between the two USB port. There is a 6 in 1 card reader located in the front side. As per connectivity issue Y480 is loaded with latest Bluetooth3.0. it also supports Ethernet and 802.11n Wi-Fi
Battery Life
The Lenovo Idea Pad Y480 comes with a 6 cell Lithium ion battery with a capacity of 48 Wh. Normally it can give support up to 5 hours. If you watch movie only it can give up to 3.20 hours. In case of light gaming, webbrowsing, and word processing it can support up to 3.00 hours. This performance not best among the series of 14 inch laptop.
Os And Software
The Y480 comes with pre loaded 64 bit Microsoft Windows 7 Home edition. The Y480 has bunch of software studded in it and they are:- Lenovo Energy Management, Lenovo OneKey Recovery, Lenovo OneKey Theater, Lenovo VeriFace, Windows Live Essentials, Adobe Reader, CyberLink Power2Go, CyberLink Youcam, ooVoo, McAfee VirusScan Plus with virus definitions of 60 days, Intelligent Touchpad.
It also has a preloaded image of Microsoft Office 2010 suite. But you have to buy the product key from Microsoft else it will work as trial version only.
User Urgradability
Like Y470 it is very easy to upgrade Y480 as its components are easily accessible. By removing the bottom panel you can get access to RAM slots, hard drive, wireless card and mSATA port so that you can upgrade them easily as per your requirement.
Conclusion
Although Y480 is a very good replacement of Y480 buit it is not perfect as every thing is not perfect in the world.
