Sony Ericsson has always been popular for its Xperia devices. Sony has taken over the mobile manufacturing business of Ericsson and now it is branding itself only with the name ‘Sony’. The new Sony has revealed Sony Xperia Ion and Sony Xperia S. Both the smartphones comprise of high multimedia features like powerful cameras. However, the phones differ in terms of their specifications.
Features Comparison Between Sony Xperia Ion & Sony Xperia S
Form Factor
Sony Xperia S measures 128x64x10.6mm while the specifications of Sony Xperia Ion are 133x68x10.8mm. Both the smartphones have same weight i.e 144 grams. Though they have variation in the dimensions of their size but they weigh the same.
Sony Xperia Ion has the basic Android buttons along with the touch capacitive buttons. The build quality of the phone is quite strong. It has a plastic exterior that gives it a more solid look.
There are three dots in Xperia S that are touch enabled. They function for the Back, Options and Home touch buttons. Though the setup is quite confusing but a new experiment has been done with the touch capacitive buttons.

In case you want to experiment something with touch capacitive buttons, then you must use Xperia S. The physical buttons of Xperia S cannot be used to their full extent because of its user interface. However, things will definitely change with the addition of Android Ice Cream Sandwich. But in case you want to use the basic 4-key setup, go for Xperia Ion. Sony Xperia S is definitely better because of its new concept.
Display
With a 4.3-inch LCD capacitive touchscreen, Sony Xperia S gives a 342 ppi pixel density. Sony Xperia Ion comes with a 4.5-inch LCD screen and offers a pixel density of 323 ppi. The high-definition screens of both the smartphones give a decent resolution with a pixel count of 720×1280 pixels.
Multi-touch feature is supported by both the smartphones. The games and apps conceptualized these days support the multi-touch feature. You can use 10 fingers simultaneously on the Sony Xperia S’s screen whereas Sony Xperia Ion supports four fingers. Both the smartphones have a proximity sensor and an accelerometer. The glass used on their exterior is scratch resistant. The displays of both the phones support around 16M colors. However, Sony Xperia Ion is more useful as it has a larger screen.
Camera
Both the smartphones support 12MP camera. Sony always uses the best camera optics and it has incorporated the 12MP cameras in these phones. The smartphones also feature geo-tagging, image stabilization, 3D sweep panorama, face & smile detection and touch focus. The photos are captured by both the smartphones at 4000×3000 pixels. LED flash and autofocus are also featured in the phones.

The HD video is captured at 1080p by both the phones. There is a 1.3MP front-facing camera on both the smartphones. You can use it for video calling through Skype.
Memory
Sony Xperia S offers an internal memory of 32GB but there is no slot to expand it further. Therefore, there is no microSD card slot. Xperia Ion, on the other hand, comes with an internal memory of 16GB which is expandable to 32GB with a microSD card.
Xperia Ion transfers the data easily whereas the internal memory of Xperia S is limited.
Connectivity
Both the devices support Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct & DLNA capabilities along with a Wi-Fi hotspot feature. Other connectivity features include Bluetooth 2.1 and GPS. Both the devices have an EDR support. A stereo FM radio is also included.

Operating System & User Interface
Both the smartphones use Android Gingerbread 2.3.4. Sony has used TimeScape user interface in the devices. The user interface offers an amazing integration of Facebook with the phone. Sony has used the latest version of Timescape in the smartphones. Several features have been added that make the UI intuitive. However, the devices will soon be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
Battery & Processor
Sony Xperia S comes with a 1,750 mAh battery whereas Xperia Ion uses a 1,900 mAh battery. Xperia Ion has more battery capacity because of the larger screen. However, the battery capacity of Xperia S is less as compared to its features.
The processors used in the devices are quite powerful. They use a dual-core processor of 1.5GHz with a Qualcomm MSM 8260 Snapdragon chipset. There is a microSIM slot in Xperia S whereas Xperia Ion supports the basic SIM cards.

Price
Sony Xperia Ion will be available at Rs. 30,000 whereas the cost of Sony Xperia S is not revealed yet.
Sum Up
Both the smartphones are worth buying because of their excellent features. Xperia Ion is better than Xperia S with a larger screen and batter capacity. Xperia S lacks expandable memory but its screen is still usable. Though it becomes little difficult to carry a phone with a large screen but it is useful for watching the videos. Both the smartphones exhibit high quality. Make your choice!
